Konnichiwa !!!

...I love Japan!
...and yet I don't know much about it except world famous touristic clichés such as the snow-covered Mount Fuji, Geisha, paintings of waves and mountains, tea ceremony, sumo, fugu, bento, ikebana, origami, sakura, dancing robots etc.....
I know this is the country of Manga, (us French kids were fed with it on TV in the Eighties!), Mario and the lovely Hello Kitty, which makes it a fascinating blend of ancient and modern, formality and poetry, trash and kawaii...
And the food is absolutely delicious...

For a few months now I have been exchanging gifts and letters with a Japanese friend I met online (so far!)

Here are a few pictures of some of the things I have received from her over the past few months...

A lot of  re-ment  (most of them are not on the picture) which are 1/6 miniature toys, very clever and great fun :-)

A lot of small "Bonne Maman" boxes, 1/6 play scale as well, it seems the brand is well-known there as well!

Exotic delicious food including candy, chocolate, rice crackers, miso soup, mushroom soup etc...yum!

Always wrapped in the most beautiful papers....

Letter set, masking tape, paper cake cases, all  small wonders, I love everything each time, very exciting to receive each parcel!!!

I am so happy to exchange letters and gifts with my "penpal" from Japan!  Especially as my last online "penpal" no longer writes to me or calls me - but he does make me a nice cup of tea every morning! :-)

I hope one day we will meet Soyoko for real, but in the meantime, we go on practising eating sushis at our favourite Chinese restaurant, and I am always thinking what I can put in the next package for my friend Soyoko :-)

Limited Edition St Valentine's Day Cake GIVEAWAY!

Each year to mark St Valentine's Day, we create an especially romantic cake.  This year "Le Valentin" 2010 is a giant heart-shaped pink macaroon decorated with raspberries, raspberry macaroons and a white chocolate Eiffel tower.  There's even a special commemorative doily which is signed and numbered.

But this year, we're keeping one back, and it could be yours....

If you'd like to be in with a chance of winning one of these limited edition pieces, all you have to do is leave a nice comment on this post - that's it!  The winner will be drawn at random from the comments next Sunday (21 February) and will be notified via the blog.

IMPORTANT!  If you wish to participate in the "giveaway", please avoid using the "anonymous" option (use the "name/url" option instead) otherwise we will be unable to contact you if you win!

If you can't wait until next Sunday, or if you really don't want to miss out on adding this lovely piece to your collection, the remaining editions of this cake is available right now on Etsy - click here to see the listing.

Good luck folks and Happy St Valentine's Day!

Parisian Love

Last weekend we were able to watch the Superbowl live. Sadly, however, the big commercials that are shown on the US television coverage aren't shown here :o(

If they had been, we might have picked up on this one sooner - a rather sweet advert from Google, which was even discussed on French TV this week!

Grab a Kleenex to wipe away those tears, it's like a condensed Hugh Grant romantic comedy!  Happy Valentine's Day everyone!

You can see the rest of the Superbowl spots here - which are your favourites?

The Most Romantic Day of Your Life...

Mmmm...woken softly with a kiss and breakfast in bed. This morning there are no cornflakes; they have been replaced by chocolate-dipped strawberries and your glass of fruit juice replaced with champagne.

It's Valentine's Day! That explains the red rose. How romantic!

A gift! I'll open it after I've had a sip of....ooooh earrings too!

"You can wear them tonight..." he smiles, "...to the opéra".
"Tonight? Then we have time for a lie-in...?"
"Um, no, I mean THE 'Opéra', you know, in Paris, France..."

"But how are we...oh! That explains the airline tickets! You have planned everything!"

It's the start of a the most romantic day of your life....

This set along with many other new Valentine's originals can be found in our Etsy store.

Snails and Frogs Legs - Eat 'em...Just Don't Look! / C'est Bon Mais C'est Degueu!

One of the questions I'm asked the most often by friends and family in the UK is "Do you really eat snails?"  And as much as I love to exaggerate when I reply ("yes, and you can still feel them wiggling when you swallow!" - a lie, they're dead...), they are actually delicious.  Anything doused in steaming hot garlic butter can't be bad!

Snails in hot garlic butter

The secret is to not look too closely - it's not pretty!  They have a unique taste - a little "earthy" and slightly chewy.

He's in there somewhere!

And it's not just snails; the other great cliché is frog's legs.  Until moving to France, I thought it was just a joke (of the type "Waiter, do you have frogs legs?", "No Sir, I always walk this way...").  However they are easily found in the frozen aisle of supermarkets - and once again cooked in delicious garlic.  For anyone interested in knowing, the meat is rather similar to chicken in taste and texture.

Unlike the snails, however, it's much more difficult to eat them without looking!

So have you tried either of these delicacies?  Do you have your own "tasty, but yucky" favourites?

Pancakes and Groundhogs - Les Crêpes à la Marmotte !

Today is "La Chandeleur" - French "Pancake Day"!

Originally a pagan celebration, over time it has been merged into the Christian "Candlemas".  The name "La Chandeleur" originates from the lighting of "chandelles" in churches at midnight in an act of purification.

In the US the celebration has been replaced by Groundhog Day (which also takes place today) and there are many similarities between the two, mostly relating to weather, and the prediction of when will be the end of Winter and the beginning of spring.  Looking outside at the terrible weather today, it seems we're in for a long winter...

But as far as most people in France are concerned, today is all about CREPES!

Miniature crêpes

We've already posted about how versatile crêpes are, but did you know that they can also be used for fortune-telling?  It's traditional to hold a coin in one hand and the crêpe pan in the other and flip the crêpe.  If you manage to do it successfully, you can expect a prosperous year.  If not...well, try again - we won't tell!

Or you could keep in a cupboard or wardrobe the first crêpe baked - it's said to help with a bountiful harvest (not to mention being handy for secret midnight snack!).

Today we made sweet crêpes for "le gouter" - the end of afternoon snack.

Real folded crêpe - paper thin!

No prizes for guessing what we'll be watching while eating our savoury crêpes later this evening...!

And to mark the day, we've used one of our 'gouter' crêpes to do a special background for the blog today!
